Sooner or later, every diver runs across something in the water that he or she would like to raise to the surface. It could be an anchor, a giant clam, a cannonball, a bag full of fish or lobsters, or even another diver who may be injured or worse.
An inexperienced diver will sometimes attempt to use the lifting capabilities of his buoyancy compensator to accomplish the lift. This is one of the most dangerous mistakes you can make.
If you have overinflated your BCD and are attempting to lift something heavy, and your hold on that object is broken, you will shoot to the surface like a rocket. You remember what your instructor told you would happen to your internal air spaces if you did that. It's not pretty to contemplate.
Experienced divers will frequently carry a lift bag because they know that if they use it only one time, it will more than pay for its low original cost. All you have to do is hook it onto whatever it is you want to lift and bleed in some air from your regulator. It will take your object and you both to the surface as if you were on an elevator.

There is an air dump operated with a cable that runs to the bottom of the bag so you can control the rate of ascent. The air dump is a carefully engineered over-pressure valve designed to adequately vent the air from a fully charged bag on a free ascent from any depth.

There are different lift bags for different purposes.

All our bags have one or more handles and tie-off points to make them easy to grasp and secure both in and out of the water.
All our bags are designed to be folded and rolled into compact, negatively-buoyant rolls that are easy for the diver to handle and deploy underwater.
